Tasmanian Land Conservancy

The Tasmanian Land Conservancy (TLC) is an independent, for-purpose (not-for-profit), science and community-based organisation that protects nature on private land in Tasmania, both on our reserves and in partnership with landholders. Through science and community engagement, we inspire and empower people to contribute to nature conservation in Tasmania; we do this for the benefit of current and future human generations and for nature itself. Across Tasmania, TLC buys land of high conservation value to protect habitats for rare and threatened species. We work with landholders to identify, protect and manage habitat on their properties, while also establishing our own nature reserves where we conduct scientific research and monitoring that informs their management.

About us

The TLC has a diverse business model, with revenue comprising philanthropic programs, government and non- government grants and conservation business opportunities. At the TLC we pride ourselves on our collaborative, outcome-focused workplace, and we respect and acknowledge the diversity of people, culture and communities. The TLC seeks new ways to achieve conservation that values nature and the economic, cultural and social benefits it provides us all. TLC contributes to building the capacity of the conservation sector by offering paid internships to develop practical experience for people early in their careers.

Mission, vision, purpose

Through science, community and enduring commitment, we inspire and empower people to conserve nature in Tasmania. We do this for the benefit of current and future generations and for nature itself.

Work culture and values

The TLC is committed to fostering a culture where workers,

individually and collectively, take responsibility to uphold the TLC Values as our organisation’s guiding principles. The values are:

  • nature – for nature’s sake and for the benefit of humankind

  • people – we respect the diversity of people, cultures and communities and we treat each other equally and fairly

  • inquiry – science, research, curiosity and questioning leads to innovation

  • collaboration – we can achieve more for nature conservation in partnership than on our own

  • transparency and accountability – our supporters put their faith and trust in us to deliver nature conservation results

  • individual responsibility and autonomy – to support a culture of leadership within and outside our organisation

  • efficiency, effectiveness and results – because we are passionate about achieving nature conservation for nature itself and for the wellbeing of people, now and in the future.
