About the role

Role details: you will be assisting on all project work in a small, busy profit-for-purpose environmental consultancy. Office-based work will involve preparation of reports for native vegetation removal assessments, preparation of GIS maps for use in the field, data entry, trail camera image tagging, minor data analysis, report writing and other tasks that arise as new project work is secured. Fieldwork will include ground parrot habitat surveys, flora quadrat monitoring, native seed collection, assistance with habitat hectare surveys, weed management, and trail camera checks. Roofed accommodation is provided on fieldwork when possible but some camping may be required. Depending on skill set, the intern may also lead on design of a social media policy for the organisation and prepare some case studies for our website.

Selection criteria
Essential
  • Degree in environmental science, ecology, conservation, or related fields

  • Knowledge of Victorian flora

  • GIS experience

  • Current driver’s licence and own car

  • Own camping equipment

  • Proven ability to work independently and in a team

  • Demonstrated understanding of Microsoft Office programmes

Desirable

  • Experience in undertaking fieldwork in remote locations

  • Demonstrated understanding of Occupational Health and Safety systems and understanding of importance of safety during fieldwork

  • Good communication skills and capacity to build strong working relationships with a range of stakeholders including Government officials and landowners.

Internship outcomes

At the end of the 12 weeks you will have:

  • a full understanding of the use of ArcGIS Field Maps in fieldwork and production of maps for reports using ArcGIS

  • a good understanding of the importance of Occupational Health and Safety requirements during fieldwork; you will have the opportunity to be the OH&S lead on one day (fully supervised), preparing a Job Safety Analysis, and talking your team through a Standard Operating Procedure for an item of equipment and a Pre-start checklist

  • undertaken compilation of flora lists with native and non-native species identified for inclusion in reports, and be able to upload threatened flora species records to the Victorian Biodiversity Atlas

  • undertaken a desktop review of threatened species (flora and fauna) and ecological communities required for reports that accompany statutory planning permit applications

  • undertaken report writing incorporating all data collected in the field

  • a solid understanding of the agencies involved in natural resource management in Victoria and meet many key members of DEECA, Parks Victoria, local Councils, local Catchment Management Authorities etc.

  • an understanding of offset site management, particularly management of threats such as weeds and feral animals and how they are recorded and addressed

  • undertaken field surveys at remote locations in Gippsland

  • understand how strategies (e.g. invasive species strategies) are developed and be involved in stakeholder engagement for any underway during your internship

Additional details

Accommodation will be provided as part of the internship and may be up to half an hour out of Bairnsdale. As public transport is scarce here, a car and Australian driver's licence is required. Roofed accommodation is usually provided on fieldwork but camping may be required and you must supply your own equipment. All personal protective equipment will be provided by Ecologic NRM.
